THE NEW MUNICIPAL HALL OF IOANNINA ARCHITECTURAL IDEAS COMPETITION

Location: Ioannina, Greece
Year: 2006
Status: Completed
Area: 5.000 sq.m.
In colaboration with:
V. Aggelopoulou, P. Rahmatha and A. Valioti

The design proposal has taken into account the new piazza which was designed at an earlier stage competition and unified it with the rest of the city through the main building. A large auditorium, which was part of the brief, is situated partly underground and its roof provides walking space thus enhancing the above relationship between the building and the new central piazza. The building is developed into four levels each one housing one of the main departments of the Municipality and two underground parking levels. The facade of the building houses mechanically controlled shading devices, which are part of the building management system. Natural light and ventilation is also provided from sections on the roof through the central atrium of the building.
