MARTYRíS SQUARE AND THE GRAND AXIS OF BEIRUT INTERNATIONAL URBAN DESIGN IDEAS COMPETITION

Location: Beirut, Lebanon
Year: 2004
Status: Completed
Area: Urban Design
Team: S. Mikrou and N. Kourniatis

The proposal aims at emphasizing Beirutís Grand Axis while at the same time projecting the notion of Martyrís Square. This can be achieved if a clear starting and a clear ending point act as landmarks that connect with each other through an array of adjacent layers. These two points are identifiable with two new buildings, an Aquarium at the northern starting point, and a Library at the southern end of the Grand Axis.
